Capstone Design Course
As you may know, the Department of Civil Engineering
requires all students to take capstone design, a course where students work
along side a practicing engineer – their mentor – to solve a real world
problem. The project could be something that the mentor has already
completed, is currently being solved, or is being planned.
One professor organizes a class of 20 - 30 students into groups of 3 - 4.
Each group works with a practitioner-mentor, sometimes meeting at the Civil
Engineering Building, and sometimes at the business place of the mentor. The
effort involves about 30 hours over the 15 week semester. The Department
will reimburse you for all expenses (including parking), but cannot provide
salary. You will receive Professional Development Hours (PDH's). A list of
mentor responsibilities follows.
Course: CE/GeoE 4102: CAPSTONE DESIGN
Mentor Responsibilities:

Provide a title and a one-paragraph project description
by Dec 16, 2004.

Meet with instructors to discuss course requirements.

Present a 5-10 minute talk on the project, either Jan. 18
or 20, 16:00-17:15, in room 210 of the Civil Engineering Building.

Meet with the students at least once per week; meeting
place and time should be decided based on students' and your schedule.

Provide background information and technical assistance
on the project.

Be available for consultation by email or telephone.

Provide comments and grades on written reports: work
plan; preliminary report; draft of final report; final report.

Attend final oral presentation in room 210 of the Civil
Engineering Building.

Get reimbursed for parking and other expenses.
